Sedation for Nervous Patients

If you shudder at the thought of undergoing a dental procedure, you are not alone. Many people are fearful of dental procedures and would rather endure dental pain over setting foot in a dentist’s office. The good news is that we offer nitrous oxide sedation to allow you to relax and enjoy a stress-free dental visit. We are all about your comfort and well-being!

Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, helps relax you and keep you comfortable during a dental procedure. We recommend sedation for patients who are nervous or have undergone traumatic dental experiences, along with those who have a bad gag reflex, or those with complex dental problems.

When administering nitrous oxide, we will place a mask on your face and ask you to breathe through your nose. You should start feeling the effects of the nitrous oxide within a few minutes. You may feel light-headed or experience a tingling feeling in your arms and legs. You should begin to feel calm and comfortable. You will not go to sleep and will be able to hear us and respond to any requests. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after removing your mask, allowing you to drive home after the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide for Children
Nitrous oxide is the preferred sedation method for children who are nervous or anxious during dental procedures. We recommend it if your child needs to undergo lengthy or complex dental procedures, or if your child is very young or suffers from dental anxiety. Nitrous oxide sedation will ensure that your child's visit to our office is positive and stress-free.

Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Safe?
The combination of laughing gas and oxygen delivered through a mask has been shown to be a safe way to alleviate anxiety and to help you relax during dental procedures. As with any treatment, make sure to tell us about any health conditions or medications you are currently taking.

During the procedure, we limit the delivery of the gas to a maximum of 70 percent nitrous oxide and 30 percent oxygen, which means you will be receiving at least 9 percent more oxygen than found in the air. We have audio and visual safety features to help avoid any adverse reactions.

Our team has extensive training and experience in the administration of nitrous oxide sedation. We will monitor your vital signs closely during the procedure to ensure your safety, comfort, and well-being.
