When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?
A dental emergency is a situation requiring immediate dental care to alleviate pain, to save a tooth, or to stop bleeding. The most common types of dental emergencies are injuries due to trauma and can include cracked, chipped, broken, dislodged, or knocked out teeth. Severe pain, losing a crown or filling, or an injury to your soft tissue including your gums, tongue, and lips are also considered dental emergencies.

If you have a knocked out tooth, contact us immediately. Meanwhile, you will need to take some steps to increase your chances of saving your tooth. Try to return it to its socket without forcing it, and make sure to avoid touching the roots. If unable to do so, keep the tooth between your cheeks and gums while taking care not to swallow it, or place it in some milk. The sooner you receive emergency care, the better. You typically have about two hours after injury to save your tooth.

If you have a partially dislodged tooth, try to keep it in its place using light pressure and contact us for an emergency appointment. If you have a swollen, painful face, you may have an acute dental infection or an abscessed tooth. Both these conditions may pose a risk to your health and will require emergency dental care.

Is It an Emergency?
If you are not sure whether or not you need emergency care, ask yourself the following questions. Has there been an impact on the mouth or face? Is there any bleeding? Is there severe pain? Are there any loose or knocked out teeth? Is there swelling? Are there bulges, swelling, or knots in the gums? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you could be in need of emergency dental care. Contact us immediately for the best possible outcomes.

Preventing Dental Emergencies
While you cannot necessarily prevent all dental emergencies, some precautions may help avoid injuries. If you are involved in sports, wearing a mouthguard can help protect your teeth from any impact which may result in injuries including chipped, broken, or knocked out teeth. Refrain from chewing on hard foods or using your teeth as tools or bottle openers to prevent breaking or fracturing your teeth.

One of the best ways to avoid a dental emergency is to keep up with your dental checkups and cleanings every six months. Preventive care can keep your teeth healthy and strong, while checkups can help us identify and treat many conditions in their early stages before they progress and potentially result in dental emergencies.
